Background story
Lain was raised by her father in a small village on the ocean. Her father made a living as an engineer designing and repairing robots and weapons for G.U.N. He was good at what he did but it always took him a while to finish his work because he had to take care of Lain. So, to help with the problem, he enrolled her into an all day swimming camp. She picked it up very quickly and eventually became the best swimmer on their side of the coast. When she 10 years old her father came down with a bad fever, so she had to stay home to take care of him. Not only did that cut time out of her swimming, but it also stopped her father from working on the latest G.U.N weapon. So to "motivate" her father, Eggman sent his robots out to kidnap Lain and to tell him that if he didn't finish the weapon within the next month, they were going to kill Lain. The threat of Lain being killed caused him to get right to work. But it was a benefit for Lain because she learned most of her fighting skills while being held captive.
